The sassier younger sister of The Apsara sits on the opposite side of the Khan River, attracting aesthetes in-the-know who come here in the hope of escaping the crowd. Effortlessly cool, this fine boutique hotel is in a revitalised French villa hidden from the view of onlookers by a mature garden.
Apsara Rive Droite sits on the opposite side of the Khan River to the peninsula and is reached from the other hotel, The Apsara, via a free two-minute ride in an elegant longtail boat or in the cool season by a bamboo bridge; either of which give you a sense of adventure. Authentically Lao, it is located in an earthy ban (village) giving you a sense of actually being in a slice of authentic Laos.
Address: Ban Pan Luang, Luang Prabang, Laos
Style & character
Contemporary style fused with a colonial twist, with a glass Buddha statuary at every turn and an effervescent colour scheme of the lobby, Rive Droite doesn’t try too hard with overpoweringly obvious boutique motifs, and that’s it’s charm. The management has done this before and learnt from it at Apsara, so everything has its place.
Service & facilities
Handpicked staff, who have been trained one-to-one, seem to appear just when you need them with elfin intuition. There’s a low-lit library packed with Taschen-type pictorials, a stunning jade-coloured outdoor pool set within lush gardens (that never gets busy thanks to the few rooms grouped around it on the ground floor), and a wicker-accented powder-blue restaurant and bar where it’s pleasant to work or chat with other guests.
Free Wi-Fi, and complimentary pick-up and drop off from airport, as well as use of the hotel’s bikes and long-tail ferry across the river to the peninsula and sister hotel, The Apsara. It’s also possible to charter the boat to take you upriver, for an Asian fusion, butler-assisted picnic at a deserted temple.
